A domestic battery suspect was arrested after he led police on a 45-minute vehicle chase that began in Zion and ended when officers used spike strips on his car, leaving all of his tires deflated.
Nicholas Sansone, 30, whose town of residence was not listed, was charged with enhanced domestic battery, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, aggravated fleeing to elude police, domestic battery causing bodily harm, driving on a suspended license and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
The Zion Police Department responded on August 21 to a 911 call made by a child in the 2900 block of Emmaus Avenue.
The child reported his mother’s boyfriend, Sansone, had hurt his mother, according to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris. Yelling was heard in the background of the call.
Officers found the woman suffering from a substantial amount of bleeding from her head.
The woman was evaluated by paramedics and refused transport to the hospital.
Katris said the woman told officers that the suspect who slammed her head into a cabinet or the floor was not Sansone but instead someone else.
Sansone was seen by officers fleeing the home in a black Chevrolet Tahoe through the rear alley.
Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle but Sansone failed to stop, Katris said.
Katris said Sansone failed to stop at least four stop signs located along 30th Street as well as additional stop signs.
A 45-minute police pursuit ensued and it ended when officers deployed multiple sets of spike strips, rendering all of the Chevrolet’s tires flat.
Sansone threw something from the vehicle and a canine later located six grams of cocaine, Katris said. A glass jar with 20 grams of suspected fentanyl was located in Sansone’s vehicle.
Sansone admitted to getting into an argument with his girlfriend on the night of the incident that turned physical, Katris said.
The man said he fled from officers because his license was suspended.
Sansone was on parole at the time of the incident for a Cook County case where he pleaded guilty to possessing 15-100 grams of fentanyl.
He was previously charged with attempted murder in 2022 in Cook County but that case was dismissed when the victim died.
Sansone also has prior convictions for residential burglary, domestic battery and aggravated battery.
Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Sansone held in the Lake County Jail pending trial after granting a petition to detain him following a detention hearing.
The judge said Sansone is a real and present threat and there were no conditions of release besides holding him in custody.
The Illinois Department of Corrections issued a parole violation warrant for Sansone following his arrest.
