Prosecutors say it was “pure luck” no one was injured after a woman allegedly fired shots before her gun jammed during a fight outside a bar in Waukegan.

The Waukegan Police Department responded on September 1 to a report of a fight in progress and shots fired at J’s Reggae Bar, 2201 Grand Avenue in Waukegan.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Theis said officers arrived to find a large group of women who were dispersing.

Officers learned a woman pointed a black handgun at a victim.

The suspect then pointed the gun into the air and fired twice before leaving in a blue Dodge Avenger, Theis said.

Officers located the Dodge a few blocks away and conducted a traffic stop on it.

Jataleon Dixon, 22, of Zion, was the driver and sole occupant of the car, Theis said. A search of the gun yielded a black Glock 26 handgun in Dixon’s purse.

Dixon has a Firearm Owner’s Identification card but no concealed carry license.

Theis said the gun had five rounds in the magazine and appeared to have jammed as a bullet was being chambered.

The victim identified Dixon as the suspect who pointed a gun at her and fired the shots.

Dixon was arrested and charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony.

Theis said Dixon showed a “wanton and reckless disregard” for those at the bar.

“Anyone who has a valid FOID card should know that firing bullets into the air means those bullets must land somewhere. It is only through pure luck that no one was hurt when those bullets landed,” Theis said.

A public defender for Dixon said the woman is a single parent, currently pregnant and works as a security guard. She had also planned to apply to be a corrections officer in Wisconsin.

The attorney said his client denies being involved in the incident.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Dixon pending trial.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak denied the petition and released Dixon from custody on Wednesday after saying he did not find her to be a real and present threat.

The judge said there were conditions of release to ensure the community’s safety.

Dixon was placed on Level 4 pre-trial services monitoring and ordered to not consume any alcohol or illegal drugs and not possess any dangerous weapons. She was also ordered to have no contact with the victim.

A status of preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 15.
