A driver was seriously injured and flown to the hospital after they crashed their car through a Walmart store in Algonquin at a high rate of speed Tuesday morning.

The Algonquin Police Department and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District responded around 12:24 a.m. Tuesday to Walmart Supercenter, 1410 South Randall Road in Algonquin, for a vehicle crash.

Officers arrived on the scene and found a vehicle that crashed into the building with the driver trapped.

Algonquin Police Department Sgt. Johnny Beltran said a preliminary investigation showed that a red sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on the rear access road for Algonquin Commons.

The vehicle crossed County Line Road and collided with the southwest side of the Walmart, Beltran said.

Both the building and the vehicle sustained significant damage, Beltran said.

A LifeNet medical helicopter was called to the scene and landed in the parking lot of the store.

Beltran said the driver of the sedan was transported by the helicopter to a Level 1 trauma center with serious injuries. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

The Walmart was closed at the time of the incident but there were employees still inside. No one inside was injured.

The Algonquin Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident.
