Benedicto M. Aviles, 60, of Lincolnshire.

The sheriff says a Lincolnshire man attempted to sexually assault a 7-year-old girl after showing her sexually explicit material while they were at a Labor Day party near Mundelein.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said sheriff’s deputies took a report on September 2 for an attempted sexual assault of a child in unincorporated Mundelein.

Benedicto M. Aviles, 60, of Lincolnshire, tried having a 7-year-old relative perform a sexual act on him, Covelli said.

Sheriff’s detectives began an investigation and worked closely with the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center.

Detectives determined Aviles was at a Labor Day party when he offered to take a 7-year-old relative swimming, Covelli said.

Covelli said Aviles began showing the child videos of pornography instead of taking her in the pool.

Aviles pulled his pants down and attempted to convince the child to perform sexual acts that were shown in the video, Covelli said.

Covelli said Aviles’ plan was interrupted when the child’s mother called out for the child after not seeing her in the swimming pool.

The girl disclosed to her mother what occurred after Aviles left and the family immediately made a police report of the incident.

Sheriff’s detectives attempted to locate Aviles several times but they were unsuccessful as he was not at his home and instead staying elsewhere.

Detectives located Aviles on Tuesday and arrested him.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of indecent solicitation of a child and attempted predatory sexual assault of a child. Additional charges are possible.

“No child should ever endure the trauma of victimization, especially at the hands of a trusted adult,” Lake County Sheriff John D. Idleburg said.

“The Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center plays a crucial role in supporting children impacted by sexual abuse and other crimes. With a full-time sheriff’s detective dedicated to the center, we are fully committed to this important partnership, ensuring that every effort is made to protect and provide the best possible resources to the children of Lake County,” Idleburg said.

The state’s attorney’s office filed a petition to detain Aviles in the Lake County Jail pending trial.

Aviles appeared for a First Appearance Court hearing in front of Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim on Wednesday morning.

The judge ordered Aviles held pending a detention hearing, which he scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
