The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies rescued a man, who was reported to be armed and in mental distress, from Lake Michigan after his boat capsized Wednesday morning.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said their Marine Unit and sheriff’s deputies, along with Canine Duke, received a call for a person in distress call around 6:50 a.m. Wednesday.
The sheriff’s office launched their Lake Michigan patrol boat to assist in locating a man approximately three miles from shore.
The man was threatening self-harm and allegedly armed with a firearm, officials said.
The sheriff’s office worked with Kenosha County and the U.S. Coast Guard and responded to the Illinois-Wisconsin border.
Officials said the man was in the water and his small fishing boat capsized but did not fully sink in Lake Michigan.
A private vessel located the man and stayed with him until law enforcement arrived.
The man was ultimately rescued from the water without further issue and brought to safety, officials said.
Crews remained in the area early Wednesday afternoon to recover the boat and search for the firearm.
