Cedric M. Hammond, 40, of Belvidere.

A 40-year-old man allegedly swallowed a baggie of drugs and bit a sheriff’s deputy while resisting arrest following a traffic stop in McHenry County Thursday afternoon.

Cedric M. Hammond, 40, of Belvidere, was charged with aggravated battery of a peace officer, possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest causing injury, obstructing justice, unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver and driving on a revoked license.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Hammond was driving a vehicle around 1:45 p.m. Thursday with a revoked driver’s license.

McHenry County sheriff’s deputies stopped him near Route 14 and Doty Road in Woodstock.

Hammond also unlawfully possessed cannabis within the passenger area of the car, the complaint said.

The complaint said Hammond was found in possession of less than 15 grams of a substance containing cocaine.

Hammond ran away from sheriff’s deputies and then flailed his arms while resisting arrest, causing a deputy to be injured, the complaint said.

Hammon bit the left thumb of a sheriff’s deputy, causing injury, the complaint said.

The complaint said Hammond also destroyed evidence by swallowing a plastic baggie containing an off-white chunky substance consistent with drugs.

He was transported to the McHenry County Jail and released following an initial appearance court hearing on Friday because the charges are non-detainable under the Illinois SAFE-T Act.

McHenry County Judge Carl Metz ordered Hammond to not consume illicit substances and submit to random testing.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on October 11 for a status of preliminary hearing.
