A suspect is in custody after a shooting led to one of the gunmen and a child being shot in North Chicago Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The North Chicago Police Department responded around 3 p.m. Saturday to the 1300 block of Victoria Avenue for a report of a shooting.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said officers received a ShotSpotter alert for 13 rounds fired.

Officers arrived and found numerous shell casings in the street and a blood trail.

Officers located a juvenile victim who was shot in the leg. They applied a tourniquet to slow the bleeding.

The North Chicago Fire Department responded and transported the juvenile to a local hospital for treatment.

Katris said staff with Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan soon after notified police of a walk-in gunshot victim at their hospital.

The subject was a 21-year-old Waukegan man, who was later identified as one of the offenders in the shooting.

Video surveillance showed the man shooting rounds before running into the backyard of a residence in the 1300 block of Victoria Avenue, Katris said.

Officers found two guns in a grill behind the residence, Katris said. The 21-year-old man had gunshot residue on his hands.

He has since been released from the hospital and is in police custody.

It is unclear if the juvenile fired shots at the offender or how the offender was shot.
