A neighbor called 911 after spotting a fire that left a resident displaced after his house was deemed uninhabitable in North Chicago Friday evening, fire officials said.
The North Chicago Fire Department responded around 7 p.m. Friday to the 1500 block of 20th Street in North Chicago for a report of a structure fire.
North Chicago Fire Department Battalion Chief Tom Deinken said firefighters arrived to find light smoke showing from the second floor of a house.
A neighbor who spotted the fire called 911 to report it.
Deinken said the alarm was upgraded to bring additional fire departments to the scene due to some neighboring fire departments being committed at the scene of another fire occurring simultaneously in Lake Bluff.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within approximately 10 minutes.
Fire crews remained at the scene for two to two and a half hours, which included performing overhaul operations to ensure the fire was extinguished, Deinken said.
No injuries were reported to firefighters and the resident who lives at the home was not there at the time of the fire.
Deinken said the home was under renovation but it is unknown yet what caused the fire.
The second floor sustained moderate damage and the house has been deemed uninhabitable until repairs can be made, Deinken said.
The Waukegan, Great Lakes, Beach Park and Winthrop Harbor fire departments assisted at the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the North Chicago Fire Department.
