A woman escaped uninjured after she drove her car off of an embankment and it rolled over into a pond at a shopping center in Long Grove Monday morning.

The Long Grove Fire Protection District, along with multiple fire departments, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 9:15 a.m. Monday to Long Grove Commons, 3976 Route 22 in Long Grove, for a report of a water rescue.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found a car that drove from the parking lot down an embankment and into the water, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

Deputies learned the 61-year-old Buffalo Grove woman was already out of her 2018 Mercedes-Benz crossover.

The woman was uninjured and the Mercedes-Benz came to rest on its roof in the water.

Covelli said a preliminary investigation shows the woman was pulling into a parking space and may have put her foot on the accelerator instead of the brake.

The woman’s action caused the vehicle to leave the parking lot area and drive down the embankment.

The Mercedes-Benz rolled over onto its roof because of the angle the vehicle went into the pond, Covelli said.

Covelli said the woman was able to exit the car and the property owner put a ladder down the embankment to help her get back to the parking lot.

A crane-style tow truck was used to remove the vehicle from the water.
