Three people were injured after a car ran a stop sign and was t-boned by another vehicle, causing one of the cars to strike a school bus near Mundelein Tuesday morning.

The Grayslake Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 7:20 a.m. Tuesday to Fremont Center Road and Erhart Road in unincorporated Mundelein for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found three vehicles involved, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

A preliminary investigation shows the driver of a Kia sedan was traveling eastbound on Erhart Road.

The driver reported they did not see the stop sign at the intersection, Covelli said.

The driver said the position of the sun created an issue for him seeing it.

He drove through the stop sign and struck a Toyota sedan, which was traveling northbound on Fremont Center Road, Covelli said.

The Kia then struck the front of a school bus, which was stopped at the stop sign facing westbound on Erhart Road waiting to turn right onto Fremont Center Road.

Firefighters had to extricate one person from the wreckage.

Covelli said the driver and passenger of the Kia were transported to an area hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Toyota was treated at the scene for minor injuries and declined transport to the hospital.

The driver of the bus was uninjured. The school bus had no passengers at the time of the crash, Covelli said.

An email sent to parents of students said the crash involved a Fremont School District 79 bus and families whose bus routes were affected had been notified by the transportation department.
