Charges have been filed against a convicted felon found with a gun after he led police in Wisconsin on a pursuit that crossed the state border and ended with him fleeing on foot in Zion.
The Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin Police Department said one of their third shift officers was driving on Sheridan Road near 104th Street around 3:35 a.m. on September 5.
The officer narrowly avoided a rear-end collision by a reckless driver in a gold Chevrolet Tahoe.
A traffic stop was conducted but the driver of the vehicle refused to stop, police officials said.
A pursuit ensued but was terminated by the officer as the Chevrolet entered Illinois from Wisconsin.
The officer relayed the vehicle information to surrounding police agencies.
Officers from the Zion Police Department were in the immediate area and located the Chevrolet almost instantly, police officials said.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Nicholas Shepherd said officers spotted the vehicle near Sheridan Road and 18th Street in Zion.
Officers followed the vehicle, which pulled up to a gas pump at the 7-Eleven at Sheridan Road and Barnhart Court in Zion.
The driver, identified as Kevin W. Hoy, 33, of Waukegan, fled on foot from the car into the 7-Eleven, Shepherd said.
Hoy ran away from the 7-Eleven when officers approached and was taken into custody a few blocks away after being tasered, Shepherd said.
Officers found a .40 caliber Springfield XD handgun in between the driver’s seat and center console. 12 live rounds were inserted into the magazine.
40 grams of marijuana and 3.5 grams of cocaine were located in the center console, Shepherd said.
Shepherd said Hoy was driving on a revoked license and is also a convicted felon for robbery and other offenses.
He did not have a Firearm Owner’s Identification card or concealed carry license for the gun.
Hoy was charged in Lake County with three counts of enhanced aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, driving on a revoked license third offense, possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis over 30 grams and resisting a peace officer.
He was additionally charged in Kenosha County with vehicle operator fleeing to elude, first-degree recklessly endangering safety and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Hoy was transported to the Lake County Jail following his arrest and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain him pending trial.
Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak granted the petition during a detention hearing.
A status of preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 24.
