An IDOT worker was transported to the hospital after he was hit by a vehicle while directing traffic during roadside work on Route 22 in Long Grove, sheriff’s officials said.
The Long Grove Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 8:20 a.m. Wednesday to the area of Route 22 and North Krueger Road in Long Grove for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and determined a crew was performing road work on Route 22, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
The work required closing a lane of traffic and alternating the flow of eastbound and westbound traffic.
Covelli said a preliminary investigation shows a Honda Accord, driven by a 57-year-old of Deerfield, was traveling westbound on Route 22.
The Honda struck an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) flagger who was part of the crew.
The flagger, a 52-year-old Beach Park man, placed his stop sign facing westbound traffic to stop westbound traffic so eastbound traffic could resume moving, Covelli said.
The driver of the westbound Honda did not stop and proceeded forward.
Covelli said the flagger moved into the lane of traffic in an attempt to prevent the Honda from continuing and causing a crash.
The driver of the Honda struck the flagger, leaving him with non-life-threatening injuries.
The flagger was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment, Covelli said.
The driver of the Honda, who was uninjured, was cited for disobeying a flagger and disobeying a traffic control device.
A supervisor of the injured worker told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the IDOT crew, consisting of six IDOT trucks, had been shoulder grading on Route 22 the past week.
The construction zone had message boards warning of the work and the lane closures. The injured worker has since been released from the hospital.
