Police are investigating after a 48-year-old woman was shot in Waukegan and died shortly after being rushed to the hospital early Tuesday morning.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 1:10 a.m. Tuesday to the area of Elmwood Avenue and Melrose Avenue in Waukegan for a report of a shooting.

Officers arrived and found a person shot inside of a vehicle.

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said the victim was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

The victim was pronounced dead in the emergency room after arriving at the hospital, Banek said.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the hospital.

Banek identified the victim on Wednesday as Yessenia Novoa-Poveda, 48, of Waukegan.

An autopsy was conducted on Novoa-Poveda on Wednesday at the coroner’s office.

Banek said the results showed that Novoa-Poveda died from a gunshot wound to the back.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the police department is not yet releasing any information on the case in order to avoid jeopardizing the investigation.

The homicide remains under active investigation by the Waukegan Police Department.
