A private ambulance transporting a child to the hospital with its lights and sirens activated was involved in a crash that left the ambulance rolled over in Barrington.

The Barrington Police Department and Barrington Fire Department responded around 9:15 p.m. Sunday to West Northwest Highway and North Hough Street in Barrington for a report of a two-vehicle crash with injuries.

Barrington Fire Chief John Christian said responding rescue crews were notified that an ambulance was involved in the crash.

Firefighters arrived to find a Superior private ambulance and a second car involved, Christian said. The ambulance had rolled onto its side.

Christian said the ambulance had been transporting a patient to the hospital when the collision occurred.

A person who was accompanying the patient in the back of the ambulance suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

Four other people, including the Superior paramedics, were evaluated but declined transport to the hospital, Christian said.

Barrington Police Chief David Daigle said a 2012 Mazda 3, driven by a 36-year-old Arlington Heights man, was traveling eastbound on Route 14 approaching Route 59.

The Mazada had a green light and proceeded into the intersection.

The Superior ambulance, a 2016 Mercedes, driven by a 26-year-old man, was traveling southbound on Hough Street, Daigle said.

Witnesses reported the ambulance had its lights and sirens activated when it proceeded into the intersection.

Daigle said the ambulance was struck on its passenger side by the Mazda and rolled over.

The patient in the ambulance was a 3-year-old boy, who was accompanied by a 39-year-old woman.
