Prosecutors say a man, who had an active warrant and was driving a vehicle wanted in shootings, resisted arrest and kicked an officer in the face in Gurnee.
Montrell A. Lewis, 46, of Round Lake Park, was charged with aggravated battery of a peace officer, two counts of resisting a peace officer, criminal damage to property, obstructing a peace officer, driving on a revoked license and registration light violation.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Sue Price Cohen said officers with the Gurnee Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Lewis’ Jeep Patriot on September 4.
The Jeep was stopped at WoodSpring Suites, 5742 Northridge Drive in Gurnee, due to having no registration light.
Lewis ran away from officers and he pulled away from them when they tried arresting him, Price Cohen said.
Price Cohen said Lewis continued to refuse to comply and kicked an officer in the face. The officer had redness in the face and sustained a broken watch.
Officers learned Lewis had an active warrant for an aggravated fleeing to elude case that occurred on August 27 in Zion.
Lewis also had a suspended license. The Jeep he was driving is a suspect vehicle in shootings in Zion, Price Cohen said.
During a First Appearance Court hearing, Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim informed Lewis that the charges against him were non-detainable under the state’s cashless bail law and that he was unable to detain him.
The judge released Lewis from custody and ordered him to be placed on a curfew and on Level 4 pre-trial services monitoring.
Lewis was ordered to abstain from alcohol and drugs with random testing to be conducted.
Lewis is scheduled to appear in court again on October 2 for a status of preliminary hearing.
