Fire officials say a fire was accidentally started and caused substantial damage to a garage and two vehicles parked inside at a home in Wadsworth Friday morning.

The Newport Fire Protection District responded around 10:30 a.m. Friday to the 39400 block of North Dilleys Road in Wadsworth for a report of a structure fire.

Newport Fire Protection District Lt. Keenan Stone said the 911 caller, who was the homeowner, reported a garage on fire.

Fire crews arrived to find a larger detached two-car garage with heavy smoke coming from it.

Firefighters deployed hose lines and brought the fire under control within five minutes, Stone said.

Two vehicles were parked inside the garage and sustained extensive damage.

The garage itself also sustained significant damage due to the fire, Stone said.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire before it spread to other nearby structures, including the house.

The Gurnee, Pleasant Prairie, Antioch, Lake Villa and Waukegan were called to assist at the scene.

Stone said the fire occurred in a non-hydranted area. Fire crews arrived on the scene initially with 7,000 gallons of water but only used approximately 4,000 gallons to extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported to any firefighters or residents.

The fire was deemed accidental in nature by human cause, Stone said. The fire began outside of the garage and spread to the structure.
