Police found a man illegally in possession of a loaded gun after they stopped him while responding to a call that he tried breaking into an occupied home in Deerfield.
The Deerfield Police Department responded around 9:20 p.m. on September 18 to a residence on Larkdale East Road in Deerfield for a delayed report of an unknown person in a backyard.
The homeowner told officers he received an alert on his camera system about a person in his backyard, according to a police report.
Video captured a man walking through the yard and the recording stopped as the subject was seen standing in the west side of the backyard.
Officers searched the yard and did not find anyone there but a gate was unlatched.
The report said another 911 call was received from a resident on Greenbriar Drive reporting an unknown man wearing a backpack was demanding to be let inside of the home.
The homeowner reported the suspect first began pounding on a window demanding to be let in.
He then went to the sliding door and began pulling on the door in an attempt to gain entry, the report said.
Officers located the subject in the 0-100 block of Greenbriar Drive.
The man, identified as Sedarian J. Murphy, 26, of Chicago, was intoxicated, swaying in place and slurring his words, the report said. He also appeared confused and had difficulty answering questions.
Officers learned Murphy had been dropped off somewhere in Deerfield by another police department after being involved in a crash.
Murphy was trying to make it to his girlfriend’s home and was surprised when officers told him her home was on the opposite side of town, the report said.
Murphy was offered a courtesy ride to his girlfriend’s home but officers told him that he had to be searched first before he could get into the squad.
He agreed to a search and officers found a Taurus G3 handgun in his backpack, the report said. Eight rounds of ammunition were in the inserted magazine.
Murphy blurted out “That’s mine, it’s okay because it’s registered. I can have that,” according to the report.
Murphy was not legally allowed to possess the gun because he did not have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card or concealed carry license.
Court records show Murphy was charged with three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and transported to court the following day where he was released from custody.
Murphy is scheduled to appear in court again on October 15 for a status of preliminary hearing.
