Metra and Amtrak trains were delayed after a pedestrian was struck and killed by an Amtrak train at a Metra station in Deerfield Tuesday morning, officials said.
The Northbrook Fire Department, Deerfield Police Department and Metra Police Department responded around 10:10 a.m. Tuesday to the Lake Cook Road Metra station, 601 Lake Cook Road in Deerfield, for a train incident.
Emergency crews arrived to find a pedestrian that had been struck by an Amtrak train.
The victim was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene by a hospital doctor, according to officers.
A witness said it appeared the victim was struck by the train at the station platform.
None of the 158 passengers or crew members onboard the Amtrak train were injured.
Metra reported all inbound and outbound trains were halted near Lake Cook Road due to the incident.
“Estimated time of delays are unknown but extensive delays are anticipated. Updates will be provided,” Metra said around 9:20 a.m.
Inbound trains began resuming travel around 10:10 a.m. but were not stopping at Deerfield and Lake Cook Road. Outbound movement from Lake Forest to Fox Lake remained halted.
Around 10:25 a.m., inbound and outbound trains were cleared to proceed at restricted speed near Lake Cook Road.
“Trains will be operating with moderate to extensive delays and some may have operational changes,” Metra said in an updated alert.
The Amtrak Police Department was called to the scene to lead the investigation.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office also responded and is in the process of scheduling an autopsy.
Amtrak officials said the incident involved Train 1332 and the circumstances regarding what led to the incident are still under investigation.
The train involved was delayed for over two hours and 15 minutes and a second Amtrak train was delayed in its departure from Chicago by just under two hours.
Amtrak said these incidents affect everyone involved, including those injured or killed, their families, train crews and train passengers.
They serve as “critical reminders” about the importance of obeying the law and exercising caution around railroad tracks and crossings, Amtrak said, adding that they continue to work closely with Operation Lifesaver (OLI) to stop track tragedies.
The victim’s identity is being withheld until their next of kin has been notified.
