Several schools in the Gurnee area were placed on lockdown Tuesday morning due to police activity in a residential area, school officials said.
A letter was sent to Gurnee District 56 families regarding the incident.
Director of Pupil Services Rachel Solomon said River Trail School, Spaulding Elementary School and Viking Middle School were placed on soft lockdown around 11:25 a.m. Tuesday.
The lockdowns were a precautionary measure due to an incident in the surrounding community, Solomon said.
“Please know that we are monitoring this very closely and working directly with the police,” Solomon said.
Police were responding to an incident near McClure Avenue and Finch Court, which are streets located in a neighborhood just east of Warren Township High School’s O’Plaine Campus.
Warren Township High School’s O’Plaine Campus was also placed on lockdown.
A soft lockdown results in students remaining in their classrooms and students outside of the school being brought back inside to the classrooms.
Visitors are not allowed in or out of the buildings.
“The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority, and we will continue to take every precaution necessary,” Solomon said in the letter.
In an update, District 56 said the lockdowns had been lifted after the Gurnee Police Department resolved the situation.
A request for comment from the Gurnee Police Department was not immediately returned.
