A 20-year-old woman has been sentenced to six years in prison for shooting at a crowd and wounding two victims in Waukegan while on probation for a shooting.

Sophia Hanna, 20, of North Chicago, was charged in May 2023 with aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

The Waukegan Police Department and North Chicago Police Department responded around 9 p.m. on May 21, 2023, to the area of 14th Street and Lewis Avenue on the border of North Chicago and Waukegan for a report of shots fired.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain said at the time it was learned that multiple subjects gathered in a parking lot at 1824 14th Street in Waukegan.

The gathering was for a pre-arranged fight that was supposed to take place between two females over a relationship with another person, Chastain said.

While gathering in the parking lot before the fight started, there were shots fired into the crowd of people.

A juvenile, who is a Waukegan resident in her teenage years, was shot in the hip and transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, Chastain said.

A 22-year-old Park City woman was shot in the right thigh and was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Officers collected two different caliber shell casings, indicating that multiple people were shooting guns.

Multiple witnesses identified Hanna as one of the suspects who opened fire, Chastain said.

Waukegan Police interviewed several people and collected all evidence at the scene.

The charges against Hanna were filed after the Waukegan Police Department Community Crimes Division obtained an arrest warrant.

She pleaded guilty in June 2022 to one count of attempted aggravated discharge of a firearm in exchange for her more serious charges being dismissed.

She was sentenced to 180 days in jail, 75 hours of public service and 30 months of probation.

Hanna was still on probation in that case when she committed 14th Street shooting.

Court records show Hanna pleaded guilty in her latest case to one count of aggravated battery by discharge of a firearm, a Class X felony, in late August. The rest of the charges were dismissed.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office allowed Hanna to be sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) as part of the deal, which a judge accepted.

She received 454 days of credit spent in custody awaiting trial.

IDOC records show Hanna is projected to be released from prison in July 2028.
