The body of a male was found along railroad tracks in Cary Sunday evening, prompting all Metra trains on the UP-NW line to be halted in the area.

The Cary Fire Protection District, Cary Police Department and Metra Police Department responded around 7:35 p.m. Sunday to the area of Route 14 and Cary-Algonquin Road.

Metra Director of Communications Michael Gillis said Train 728 was inbound when the engineer spotted a body adjacent to the Union Pacific train tracks north of the Cary Metra station.

Cary Deputy Police Chief Scott Naydenoff said Cary officers arrived first and found an adult male dead at the scene.

The fire department arrived and confirmed the man was deceased and cleared the scene.

The incident occurred on the elevated railroad bridge over Cary-Algonquin Road. Officers were seen using a drone to investigate the scene.

Gillis said it is not known yet whether the victim was struck by a train or not.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene.

Metra said in an alert around 8 p.m. that all inbound and outbound trains on the UP-NW near were halted due to the police activity.

“Delay times are currently unknown. Updates will be made as soon as information is received,” the alert said.

Trains remained halted until around 10:20 p.m. when they resumed with extensive delays.

The identity of the victim has not been released yet by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
