Police say that a man, whose identity has not been released yet, who was found dead along the railroad tracks in Cary Sunday is believed to have been struck by a train.
The Cary Fire Protection District, Cary Police Department and Metra Police Department responded around 7:35 p.m. Sunday to the area of Route 14 and Cary-Algonquin Road.
Metra Director of Communications Michael Gillis said Train 728 was inbound when the engineer spotted a body adjacent to the Union Pacific train tracks north of the Cary Metra station.
Cary Deputy Police Chief Scott Naydenoff said Cary officers arrived first and found an adult male dead at the scene.
The fire department arrived and confirmed the man was deceased and cleared the scene.
Naydenoff said Tuesday that the man’s injuries were consistent with being struck by a train but the investigation remains ongoing by the Metra Police Department.
The incident occurred on the elevated railroad bridge over Cary-Algonquin Road. Officers were seen using a drone to investigate the scene.
The McHenry County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene.
Metra said in an alert around 8 p.m. Sunday that all inbound and outbound trains on the UP-NW near were halted due to the police activity.
“Delay times are currently unknown. Updates will be made as soon as information is received,” the alert said.
Trains remained halted until around 10:20 p.m. Sunday when they resumed with extensive delays.
The identity of the victim has not been released by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office as of Tuesday.
