The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire District is mourning the death of a retired firefighter who served the Algonquin and Lake in the Hills area for nearly 40 years.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District announced Friday that Firefighter-EMT Ron Houghton had died.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of retired Firefighter/EMT, Ron Houghton,” the fire district said in a statement.

Houghton served the community with “dedication, bravery, and compassion” from June 12, 1979, to April 29, 2018.

Fire officials said his commitment to the safety and well-being of the people of Algonquin and Lake in the Hills “will never be forgotten, and his legacy will live on through the countless lives he saved and the friendships he built.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ron’s family, friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to know him during this difficult time. Please join us in honoring his memory and celebrating a life of service, courage, and kindness,” the fire district said.

The Algonquin Police Department said they were saddened to learn of Houghton’s death.

“Many officers worked side by side with Ron and considered him a friend. We will miss you Ron, may you rest in peace,” the department said.

The Lake in the Hills Police Department said they were “grateful” for Houghton’s service, sacrifices and support to the community.

“We want to extent our deepest thoughts and condolences to the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District for the loss of Firefighter/EMT Ron Houghton,” the police department said.
