Alexander Ramos, 34, of Mundelein.

Prosecutors say a 34-year-old man walked into a police station and confessed to sexually assaulting and abusing a child under the age of 13 in Mundelein.

Alexander Ramos, 34, of Mundelein, was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday on two counts of criminal sexual assault of a child and three counts of criminal sexual abuse of a child.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Colleen McConnell said Ramos went to the Mundelein Police Department on the evening of September 14 to confess to sexually abusing a juvenile family member.

Ramos said the first incident occurred in late 2023 when the child was under 13.

He said he saw the girl sleeping in a robe and she rolled over, exposing herself, McConnell said. He allegedly put his hands on her and touched her inappropriately.

Ramos said he felt like he was “going too far” so he stopped and left the room, McConnell said.

A few weeks later, the child was sleeping in the same bedroom as Ramos when the man noticed she was sleeping close to him.

He placed his hand on her hip and she did not wake up so he moved his hand over her chest, McConnell said.

Three similar incidents occurred where Ramos put his hands in the girl’s pants while she was sleeping and sexually abused her, McConnell said.

In at least one of the incidents, the mother of the victim was in the bed with them sleeping when the incidents occurred.

The victim’s mother recently caught Ramos waking up in the middle of the night and going into the child’s room.

He did not have an explanation for his actions and he told her that it was no longer appropriate for him to be helping her when she had trouble sleeping, McConnell said.

She stopped allowing him to be around the girl when she noticed him giving the child a massage in their living room.

Ramos, who said he was “attracted” to the child, told the woman he would be turning himself in to the police, McConnell said.

The mother confirmed to police that the child slept in their bed occasionally because she had trouble sleeping and that Ramos would sometimes go to the girl’s bedroom under the premise of helping her fall asleep.

The Mundelein Police Department responded to the home and located clothing that the victim had been wearing during the assaults.

McConnell said Ramos was previously convicted of battery after initially being charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse when he was a juvenile in 2005 in Lake County.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Ramos following his arrest last month.

The petition was granted and Ramos remains held in the Lake County Jail pending trial.
