A member of a Huntley-based union died after he was hit by a train in Alabama after he went missing while on his way back to Illinois following storm restoration work.
IBEW Local 196, based in Huntley, announced on Tuesday they were seeking help in locating member John Combs.
Combs, a Local 196 Journeyman Lineman, was last seen on October 4 while working storm restoration.
His last known location was in Montgomery, Alabama. Local 196 asked anyone with information to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
In an update on Thursday, Local 196 said it is “with heavy hearts” to announce the death of Combs, who was 24 years old.
“John was a dedicated member of our union, a joy to be around and his infectious kindness will be very missed,” the union said.
“Johnโs family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the local community of Montgomery, Alabama for their efforts to locate him. They are especially grateful to the IBEW family for their outpouring of help during this difficult time,” the union added.
The Montgomery, Alabama Police Department said in a statement it had launched a death investigation in the case.
The police department and the fire department received a call around 6:30 p.m. on October 4 for a subject struck by a train.
Emergency crews located the subject along the train tracks between US Foods and Stock Yard in Montgomery, police said.
The subject suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later identified the subject as Combs, who was an Illinois resident.
The circumstances surrounding the death are still under investigation, police said.
