An antique car was a total loss after a garage became engulfed in flames, causing damage to two homes in Highland Park, fire officials said.

The Highland Park Fire Department responded around 9 p.m. Thursday to the 500 block of Ridge Road in Highland Park for a report of a structure fire.

Fire crews spotted a header of smoke coming from the area while responding.

Highland Park Deputy Fire Chief Frank Nardomarino said firefighters arrived to find a detached garage fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters initiated an aggressive attack on the fire and began operating a hose line, Nardomarino said.

Two additional hose lines were operated by mutual aid fire department crews to protect the homes on both sides of the garage.

Residents of both homes were inside when the fire broke out, Nardomarino said. They escaped safely.

Nardomarino said the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Highland Park Fire Department.
