A Lake County man is in critical condition after he fell over 80 feet and had to be rescued while at Starved Rock State Park over the weekend, officials said.

The incident happened around 2:25 p.m. Saturday at the Hennepin Canyon Overlook in Starved Rock State Park, which is in LaSalle County approximately 80 miles southwest of Chicago.

The Utica Fire Protection District and Illinois Conservation Police, along with a helicopter and other fire departments, responded to a call of a fall victim.

The man, who is a resident of Park City in his mid-30s, fell over 80 feet into the canyon, fire officials said.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated for special resources.

First responders worked using a high-angle rope system to lift the victim out of the canyon, fire officials said.

He was transported by the Ottawa River Rescue Squad to the Starved Rock Lock and Dam.

A medical helicopter then flew him to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

The victim was listed in critical condition at the hospital.

The man had been on the bluff trail prior to the fall. State officials said he fell after losing grip of a tree that he was holding onto while attempting to get a better view of the canyon.
