Prosecutors say a 35-year-old woman stabbed her husband, causing him great bodily harm, in Waukegan after claiming that the man cheated on her.
Lula Armanov, 35, of Waukegan, was charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and domestic battery causing bodily harm.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said officers with the Waukegan Police Department responded on September 27 to the 600 block of Washington Park for an unknown problem.
A 911 caller reported a woman was screaming and yelling in the street. Officers met with the irate woman at a home on the block.
Armanov told them that she lives at the home with her husband and the two got into a verbal argument because she believed he was cheating on her, Katris said.
Armanov said that her husband threw stuff around their home, smashed a car window and attacked her with a hammer.
Katris said officers did not find her story credible as she was changing the story multiple times.
Officers simultaneously learned that the husband was at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan being treated for a stab wound.
Officers spoke with the victim who said that he had allowed Armanov into the home to retrieve her items.
Armanov became enraged with him and began throwing his property around the home, Katris said. She also broke the victim’s vehicle’s window.
Katris said Armanov used a razor to cut herself before stabbing her husband in the arm, which caused a wide and deep laceration that bled.
Armanov continued being aggressive toward the victim so the man struck the woman with a hammer in self-defense, Katris said.
The victim was able to escape and get to the hospital. He also managed to capture part of the attack on video and he has other videos showing prior abuse from his wife, Katris said.
The victim has had four separate orders of protection against Armanov this year. Armanov recently pleaded guilty to violating an order of protection.
The victim said in his order of protection petitions that Armanov had struck him on numerous occasions, threatened to falsely report him to the police for domestic battery and had ordered her dogs to attack him.
During a detention hearing, Lake County Judge Bolling Haxall said he was the judge who handled a majority of the prior court matters involving Armanov.
Haxall granted a petition to detain filed by prosecutors to have Armanov held in custody pending trial.
Haxall said there were no conditions of release that could ensure the victim’s safety and that Armanov has not complied with prior court orders.
She is scheduled to appear in court again on October 24 for a preliminary hearing.
