Over 100 children and staff evacuated after a fire broke out inside a daycare center in Algonquin Tuesday morning, causing it to temporarily close, fire officials said.
The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District responded around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday to Kiddie Academy, 2420 Harnish Drive in Algonquin, for an activated fire alarm.
A 911 call was received from the daycare center while fire crews were responding, fire officials said.
The caller reported a fire in the south utility room of the building.
The incident was upgraded to bring additional resources to the scene.
Fire officials said firefighters arrived and initiated an aggressive interior attack on the fire.
The fire was extinguished in under 10 minutes. The business sustained minor water and smoke damage.
Over 100 staff and children had evacuated the building, fire officials said. They were relocated to Algonquin Fire Station 2, which is next door.
An organized reunification process was established by staff with the assistance of the Algonquin Police Department. No injuries were reported to staff or children.
The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District was aided by the Algonquin Police Department and Huntley Fire Protection District.
Fire officials said the business is uninhabitable and a damage estimate was not immediately available.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District.
