Residents were displaced after a fire broke out in a mansion in Mettawa and firefighters had to haul water to the scene, which was located in an area without fire hydrants.
The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District responded around 11:48 a.m. Thursday to the 25700 block of North St. Mary’s Road in Mettawa for a report of a structure fire.
Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Steve McCaughey said firefighters arrived and found smoke showing from the roof of the home.
All occupants had evacuated the home, a more than 8,000-square-foot single-story ranch.
McCaughey said the fire originated in a bedroom area of the home.
The incident was upgraded to bring additional fire departments to the scene.
The Countryside, Libertyville, Newport, Long Grove and Prospect Heights responded with water tenders.
The area has no fire hydrants and water had to be hauled into the scene by the specialty apparatus, McCaughey said.
Firefighters worked to locate and extinguish the fire within 30 minutes of the call.
McCaughey said no injuries were reported and the house was deemed uninhabitable.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated for fire investigators.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available.
