Police say a 30-year-old woman was killed after she was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Milwaukee Avenue in Vernon Hills Friday evening.
The Vernon Hills Police Department and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District responded around 10:43 p.m. Friday to the 900 block of South Milwaukee Avenue in Vernon Hills.
Vernon Hills Deputy Police Chief Shannon Holubetz said officers received reports that a pedestrian had been struck while attempting to cross the northbound lanes of the roadway.
The first arriving officers attempted lifesaving measures before paramedics from the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District arrived and took over.
The 30-year-old Vernon Hills woman was pronounced dead due to the extent of her injuries, Holubetz said.
Witnesses to the collision were interviewed and the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation.
Impairment is not believed to be involved with the driver, Holubetz said.
“At this location, Milwaukee Avenue is a four-lane lighted roadway with no designated pedestrian crossings,” Holubetz said.
The Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) of Lake County was called to the scene to investigate. The roadway was shut down for several hours.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded and is scheduling an autopsy. The woman’s identity is being withheld pending notification to the family.
