The coroner has released the identity of a 30-year-old woman who was killed after she was struck by a car while attempting to cross Milwaukee Avenue in Vernon Hills Friday evening.

An autopsy performed Monday showed Emily Wegleiz, 30, of Vernon Hills, died as a result of blunt force injuries as a result of a vehicle collision, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

The Vernon Hills Police Department and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District responded around 10:43 p.m. Friday to the 900 block of South Milwaukee Avenue in Vernon Hills.

Vernon Hills Deputy Police Chief Shannon Holubetz said officers received reports that a pedestrian had been struck while attempting to cross the northbound lanes of the roadway.

The first arriving officers attempted lifesaving measures on Wegleiz before paramedics from the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District arrived and took over.

Wegleiz was pronounced dead due to the extent of her injuries, Holubetz said.

Impairment is not believed to be involved with the driver, Holubetz said.

“At this location, Milwaukee Avenue is a four-lane lighted roadway with no designated pedestrian crossings,” Holubetz said.

The Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) of Lake County was called to the scene to investigate.

The roadway was shut down for several hours during the investigation.
