No injuries were reported after a resident discovered a fire that started in a garage attached to a home in Hawthorn Woods Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.
The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded around 3:50 p.m. Tuesday to the 0-100 block of Lagoon Drive in Hawthorn Woods for a report of a structure fire.
Firefighters arrived to find a working fire in the garage attached to a single-story residence. Multiple fire departments were called to assist.
Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Chief David Pilgard said a 911 call was received from the resident of the home.
He heard crackling and noise in the garage. The resident opened the service door to check, Pilgard said.
He found smoke and flames in the garage and closed the service door.
“Close the service door — important thing to do. Close that door,” Pilgard said, referring to closed doors helping slow the spread of smoke and fire.
The resident called 911 and opened the main overhead garage door for firefighters.
They found an active fire in an area with tools and storage equipment on the east wall, Pilgard said.
Powered yard tools and battery-operated equipment were in the garage where the fire started.
Firefighters pulled a hose line and extinguished the fire.
Pilgard said a Tesla was in the garage at the time and it was pulled out of the garage to help save it and to minimize the risk of it catching on fire.
No injuries were reported to any firefighters or residents.
Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, Pilgard added.
