Fire officials say they are investigating after a boat was found fully engulfed in flames while it was docked at a pier at the Waukegan Harbor off of Lake Michigan.
The Waukegan Fire Department responded around 8:35 p.m. Tuesday to the Waukegan Harbor and Marina, 55 South Harbor Place in Waukegan, for a report of a boat fire.
Waukegan Fire Marshal Todd Zupec said harbor security called 911 to report a boat on fire on one of the piers.
Firefighters arrived and found a fully involved boat fire at the north pier of the harbor.
The incident was upgraded to bring additional fire department resources to the scene.
Zupec said fire crews quickly deployed hose lines to the end of the pier to begin extinguishing the fire.
The boat was on one of the further piers but firefighters “did an excellent job” deploying hose lines and extinguishing the fire in an efficient time, Zupec said.
No one was on the boat at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
Zupec said the boat sustained heavy damage but did not sink. No other boats were damaged.
Minimal damage was caused to the pier and the cause of the fire is undetermined so far, Zupec said.
