Police say occupants escaped with only minor injuries after a two-vehicle crash resulted in heavy damage with one car split in half in Gurnee Friday morning.
The Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department responded around 7:34 a.m. Friday to the intersection of Washington Street and Route 21 for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said two cars, a beige 2004 Honda sedan and a blue 2021 Kia sedan, were involved in the crash.
A preliminary investigation showed the Honda was traveling westbound on Washington Street in the left turn lane.
The Honda was attempting to turn southbound onto Route 21, Gaylor said.
The Honda began entering the intersection and turned in front of the Kia, which resulted in a collision.
Heavy damage was reported and the Honda split in half during the collision, according to firefighters.
The driver of the Honda, a 56-year-old Mundelein man, suffered minor injuries.
Gaylor said he was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment.
The driver of the Kia, a 25-year-old Waukegan man, also suffered minor injuries but declined transport to the hospital.
The crash disrupted traffic for approximately 30 minutes while crews cleaned the area and removed the cars from the roadway, Gaylor said.
No citations have been issued yet as officers are still investigating the crash.
