Investigators say they have identified all three drivers who left the scene after fatally running over a woman who was lying down in the roadway in Waukegan Tuesday.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 10:23 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Grand Avenue and New York Street for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Police officers found a woman who was unconscious and not breathing.
They began performing CPR on her until paramedics arrived and took over lifesaving measures.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain said the severely injured victim was transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan by ambulance.
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek identified the woman as Kassandra Fajardo-Rodriguez, 30, of Waukegan.
Fajardo-Rodriguez died in the emergency room shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Banek said an autopsy performed Wednesday showed Fajardo-Rodriguez died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries.
The Waukegan Police Department Major Crash Unit responded to the scene to investigate.
Chastain said the investigation showed Fajardo-Rodriguez walked into the roadway and laid down in the eastbound lanes of traffic on Grand Avenue.
She was struck by three different vehicles traveling eastbound while she was in the roadway.
All three vehicles continued driving and did not stop or notify the police after the incident, Chastain said.
The Waukegan Police Department Traffic Division continued investigating the incident.
They located the three vehicles and spoke with all three drivers, Chastain said Saturday.
The three vehicles were processed as evidence by the traffic division.
Chastain said the case will be screened by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine if any criminal charges will be brought forward.
