The fire department rescued a man who fell off a pier into the Fox River as well as a second man who attempted to rescue the victim in McHenry Saturday evening.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 5:10 p.m. Saturday to the 1400 block of North River Road in McHenry for a report of a water rescue.

McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief David Harwood said it was reported that two subjects were in the Fox River and unable to get out.

Firefighters arrived within four minutes and found two adult males in the Fox River clinging to a pier.

Rescue personnel entered the water in cold water rescue gear and rescued both victims, Harwood said.

One of the men was immediately taken to an awaiting ambulance and treated for hypothermia.

He was transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry in good condition. The second man refused treatment or transport.

Harwood said it was learned that one of the men accidentally fell from a pier into the water.

The second man jumped into the water to try and assist him.

Neither of the men was able to get out of the river due to the cold water temperature, Harwood said.
