The coroner has identified the driver of a NAPA Auto Parts van who died after driving into an intersection on a red light and causing a three-vehicle crash in Libertyville.

An autopsy performed Monday showed Neal Raffeld, 77, of Mundelein, died as a result of blunt force injuries from a vehicle crash, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

The Libertyville Police Department and Libertyville Fire Department responded around 11:46 a.m. Friday to the intersection of Winchester Road and Butterfield Road in Libertyville.

Libertyville Police Department Sgt. Dusan Racic said officers received a report of a multi-vehicle crash with injuries.

Officers arrived to find a crash involving a Chevrolet SUV, a NAPA Auto Parts van and a UPS box truck.

The van sustained heavy damage after it appeared to have been t-boned by the UPS truck.

Libertyville Deputy Police Chief Matt Goze said Saturday that Raffeld, the driver of the NAPA van, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to the scene to conduct a full crash investigation.

The intersection of Butterfield Road and Winchester Road has been completely shut down for several hours. It remained closed until 4 p.m.

Banek said the preliminary investigation shows the NAPA van driven by Raffeld was stopped at the stoplight.

The van, for an unknown reason, entered the intersection against the red light and was struck by the UPS truck, Banek said. The two vehicles then collided with the SUV.

The crash remains under investigation by the Libertyville Police Department and MCAT.
