A Mundelein man was arrested after a Wauconda police canine helped officers locate a large amount of cocaine during a traffic stop in Wauconda Saturday.
The Wauconda Police Department conducted a traffic stop around 4:20 p.m. Saturday in the 900 block of North Old Rand Road.
Officers stopped a black Cadillac sedan for traffic violations, according to Wauconda Police Department Sgt. Heather Cognac.
The driver, identified as 42-year-old Ryan Meyer, was charged with driving on a suspended license. He was released at the scene.
Cognac said the investigation continued and Wauconda Police Canine Skye and her handler, Officer Mike Nardulli, were called.
The canine conducted a sniff and search of the vehicle and Skye positively indicated on the passenger side of the vehicle.
The passenger, Joseph Nava, 32, of Mundelein, was found in possession of 29.3 grams of cocaine, Cognac said. He was taken into custody.
Cognac said the bust shows Skye “lives up to her [Halloween] costume.” A photo of the canine showed her dressed in a superhero costume.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of possession of a controlled substance, a Class 1 felony, and possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, a Class X felony.
The state’s attorney’s office filed a petition to detain Nava pending trial.
Nava appeared for a First Appearance Court hearing on Sunday and Lake County Judge James Newman ordered him held in the Lake County Jail until a detention hearing, which is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
Court records show Nava had just pleaded guilty on Wednesday to domestic battery for an incident on August 20 in Mundelein.
He was released from the Lake County Jail upon the plea and sentenced to 18 months of probation.
