Lavell T. Craig, 47, of Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Police arrested a man, who was previously convicted of homicide with a vehicle, after they caught him driving in Libertyville with a revoked license for the third time.

Lavell T. Craig, 47, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, was charged with enhanced driving while license revoked with a prior reckless homicide conviction.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said the Libertyville Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle around 2 a.m. on September 21.

The car was traveling 50 mph in a 40 mph zone and the officer made a U-turn to catch up and conduct a traffic stop, Katris said.

Katris said Craig was the driver and handed the officer a state identification card but did not have a driver’s license.

A man in the passenger seat, who had a valid driver’s license, was the owner of the car.

Craig claimed that he was only driving because the passenger did not feel well, Katris said.

The passenger reported he did not need an ambulance and was okay to drive. The car was released to the passenger.

Katris said Craig’s license was previously revoked for reckless homicide.

Court records show Craig was charged with reckless homicide by a motor vehicle for an incident in Waukegan on August 23, 2002.

He pleaded guilty to the charge in April 2003 and was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Craig has two prior violations for driving on a revoked license, with the third being the Libertyville traffic stop.

Katris said Craig has been sentenced numerous times to prison for drug and weapon cases and for violating sex offender registration.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Craig pending trial. The petition was granted and Craig remains held in the Lake County Jail.
