Authorities say a woman and a dog were both found dead inside a townhome that sustained significant damage in a late evening fire in Round Lake Tuesday evening.
The Round Lake Police Department and Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 10:08 p.m. Tuesday to the 1400 block of Remington Lane in Round Lake for a report of a structure fire.
Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Jay VandeBerg said firefighters arrived to find flames coming from the second floor of a townhouse.
Fire crews entered the home to locate, contain and extinguish the fire and search for victims, VandeBerg said.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level to bring additional firefighters from the surrounding communities to assist.
An adult female was discovered inside the residence, VandeBerg said.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. A dog also died in the fire.
No one else was injured.
The fire was deemed under control in approximately 30 minutes, VandeBerg said. The residence sustained significant damage and is uninhabitable.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office is scheduling an autopsy on the woman. A cause and manner of death has not been determined yet.
The woman’s identity is being withheld until after her next of kin has been notified and the autopsy has been completed.
The Antioch, Countryside, Fox Lake, Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Villa, Lake Zurich, Libertyville, McHenry and Spring Grove fire departments assisted the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District.
Surrounding fire departments were also on hand to handle several other calls for service in the greater Round Lake area while crews were tied up with the fire.
“We were inundated with three or four calls within that 10-12 minute period,” VandeBerg said.
“Our neighbors were able to help us and all the calls ended up getting covered,” he added.
Police detectives, fire investigators, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal and the Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and are actively investigating.
