A 14-year-old juvenile was shot in the stomach and a 17-year-old juvenile is charged following an accidental shooting in Waukegan Thursday, authorities said.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain said the two juveniles were handling firearms and pointing the weapons at each other when the 17-year-old accidentally shot the 14-year-old in the stomach at about 8 p.m. in the 1300 clock of Walnut Street.
The 14-year-old was taken from the scene to an area hospital where he remains in stable condition.
The 14-year-old is expected to make a full recovery, Chastain said.
Two semi-automatic handguns were seized by police who investigated the shooting.
The 17-year-old Waukegan juvenile has been charged by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office with multiple gun charges, including Unlawful Use of a Weapon, UUW without a FOID card, UUW without a conceal carry permit, UUW by someone under the age of 21 and reckless discharge of a firearm.
The 17-year-old has been transferred to the Depke Juvenile Center in Vernon Hills, Chastain said.
