A Gurnee man is facing multiple drug charges following his arrest earlier this week of manufacturing and delivering fentanyl in Lake County, authorities said.
James W. Asma, 58, of Gurnee is charged with a Class X felony for possession with the intent to manufacture and deliver fentanyl, a Class 1 felony possession of fentanyl, and a Class 4 felony possession of cocaine following his arrest on Wednesday, Gurnee Police PIO Shawn Gaylor said in a news release.
If found guilty at trial, Asma could be imprisoned for 6 to 30 years.
Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim ordered Asma detained while awaiting trial during a detention hearing Friday afternoon.
Gaylor said Gurnee police received a tip that possible narcotics activity was taking place at a Gurnee apartment complex off Delaney Road.
Detectives conducted a thorough investigation to verify the information, confirm its credibility, and set the stage for a carefully coordinated police response.
Gurnee police officers conducted a traffic stop on Asma as part of the investigation at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Gaylor said.
During the traffic stop, Gurnee police called in K9 Hawk to assist. During the traffic stop, Hawk alerted police to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. Upon further search, officers discovered cocaine and a substantial amount of cash.
Following Asma’s arrest, Gurnee officers executed a search warrant at his residence in the apartment complex and uncovered approximately 2,000 pills containing fentanyl.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office subsequently approved charges against Asma.
“This operation underscores our dedication to removing dangerous drugs from our community and protecting public safety,” Gurnee Police Chief Brian Smith said. “Establishing and maintaining public trust is essential, and we appreciate the community members who provided valuable information to assist us in this case. When law enforcement and the community work together, we can more effectively keep Gurnee safe.”
