Musician Billy Corgan’s restaurant in downtown Highland Park has reopened after a car drove into the building, sending his mother-in-law and a second person to the hospital.

The Highland Park Fire Department and Highland Park Police Department responded around 11:41 a.m. Wednesday to Madame ZuZuโ€™s Emporium, 1876 First Street, for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Emergency crews arrived and found a single-vehicle crash involving the building, city officials said.

A red Mini Cooper drove through the restaurant and cafe and came to rest halfway into the building.

The driver of the vehicle and a patron of the restaurant were both transported by ambulance to the hospital. The extent of their injuries was not released.

City officials said a preliminary investigation showed the crash was accidental.

Madame ZuZuโ€™s Emporium is a vegan restaurant, tea shop and performance space in downtown Highland Park.

It was founded in 2012 by Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan and his wife, Chloe Mendel.

Mendel said in a statement that the patron injured in the crash was her mother Jenny, who was spending the day and lunching with her son Augustus.

Mendel said that her son was able to leap out of the way and was not injured.

“Our family is grateful for the swift assistance of the Highland Park and Deerfield first responders,” she said.

Madame ZuZuโ€™s was closed but reopened on Thursday.

Mendel said in an update her mother was back home and recovering. “… we’re incredibly grateful for the support from our team, everyone who helped prepare our space, and all who reached out with kind words.”
