The sheriff’s office is warning drivers to be on alert after new reduced speed limits recently went into effect in several areas of McHenry County.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that new lower speed limits have gone into effect.

The speed zones were updated to reflect trends in speeds, crashes and citizen feedback.

Speed studies were conducted by the McHenry County Division of Transportation (MCDOT)

MCDOT bases its speed limit suggestions on several factors including traffic flow, crash history and driveway density.

Main Street from Wilmot Road to State Park Road, which was previously a 45 mph zone, is now a 40 mph zone.

Ridgefield Road from Route 14 to Country Club Road, which was previously a 55 mph zone, is now a 45 mph zone.

Charles Road from Route 47 to Route 120, which was previously a 55 mph zone, is now a 50 mph zone.

The changes were voted on by the McHenry County Board.

New speed limit signs have officially been installed and will be marked with “NEW” for the next several weeks.

“Please take notice of your commonly traveled routes and be sure to abide by the new speed limits,” the sheriff’s office said.

“We are always looking to keep roadways as safe as possible and are grateful for MCDOT’s help in that,” the sheriff’s office added.
