Authorities say one person was transported to the hospital after an acid leak prompted a hazardous materials response at a manufacturing plant in Wauconda Tuesday morning.

The Wauconda Fire District and Wauconda Police Department responded around 10:43 a.m. Tuesday to Synergy Flavors, 1500 Synergy Drive in Wauconda, for a report of a hazardous materials leak.

Wauconda Fire District Battalion Chief Jason Daun said employees quickly contained and secured the area.

Firefighters, in coordination with hazardous materials technicians, discovered a small quantity of acid that was leaking from a 55-gallon drum, Daun said.

The drum was located within a controlled area of the manufacturing facility.

Daun said the leak was isolated and no immediate threat to public safety or the surrounding environment was reported.

Synergy Flavors staff had already initiated their emergency response protocols.

Fire department personnel took over to ensure proper containment and ventilation of the surrounding areas within the building, Daun said.

Emergency crews verified no hazardous exposure to the surrounding community occurred and there was no fire or explosion risk associated with the incident.

Daun said one person was treated and transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

The situation was fully contained and cleanup efforts were underway Tuesday afternoon.

“Thanks to quick action from Synergy Flavors staff, they were able to effectively contain the leak and prevent any further complications,” Daun said.

The Countryside, Fox Lake, Nunda Rural and McHenry fire protection districts assisted.
