Police were conducting a death investigation after a man failed to return home and was found dead the next day in his car in the parking lot of a convenience store in Highland Park.

The Highland Park Police Department and Highland Park Fire Department responded around 9:15 a.m. Saturday to Walgreens, 655 Elm Place, for a report of an unresponsive person.

A subject inside a silver Hyundai was found unconscious and not breathing.

Highland Park Communications Manager Amanda Bennett said the man left his home around 6:45 p.m. Friday and did not return home.

He was located inside his car in the Walgreens parking lot on Saturday morning.

Bennett said it was apparent the man was deceased in the car.

No suspicious circumstances have been discovered at this time, Bennett said.

Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton said the coroner’s office responded to the scene and took possession of the 78-year-old man.

The man, who was a Highland Park resident, left his home the night prior to drive himself to the hospital before he was found, Newton said.

An autopsy performed showed his death was consistent with a cardiac-related event.
