A judge released a Lake in the Hills man who was charged with striking a 5-year-old child in the face and body with a shoe, causing injury, in Lake in the Hills.
Vincente Cerqueda-Cortes, 48, of Lake in the Hills, was charged with aggravated battery to a child and two counts of domestic battery.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Cerqueda-Cortes caused bodily harm to a child on October 16 in Lake in the Hills.
Cerqueda-Cortes used a gym shoe to strike a 5-year-old in the face, back and both arms, according to the complaint.
The child, who is a family member of Cerqueda-Cortes, suffered bruising and redness, the complaint said.
An arrest warrant was issued on Thursday for Cerqueda-Cortes and he was taken into custody on the same day.
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Cerqueda-Cortes pending trial, calling him a real and present threat to others.
McHenry County Judge Carl Metz denied the petition following an Initial Appearance Court hearing.
Metz ordered Cerqueda-Cortes to not possess firearms and to have no contact with his minor children as conditions of his release.
Cerqueda-Cortes is scheduled to appear in court again on December 5 for a status of preliminary hearing.
