Residents were left displaced after McHenry firefighters found flames and smoke coming from their house in McCullom Lake early Sunday morning.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District, Richmond Township Fire Protection and Wonder Lake Fire Protection District responded around 1:40 a.m. Sunday to the 4900 block of West Maple Hill Road in McCullom Lake for a report of a structure fire.
McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Ryan Mastandrea said crews arrived within six minutes to find a single-story home with smoke and flames coming from the front.
All residents were evacuated from the house prior to the fire department’s arrival.
The incident was upgraded to a box alarm through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) for fire departments to cover calls in McHenry, Mastandrea said.
The Cary, Woodstock, Lake Villa and Round Lake fire departments provided coverage at McHenry fire stations.
Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack to extinguish the fire while simultaneously searching the home to ensure there were no occupants inside.
Mastandrea said the area does not have fire hydrants and fire tender trucks were called to haul water to the home.
The fire was deemed under control within 20 minutes. There were no residents or firefighters injured.
The house was deemed uninhabitable and a damage estimate was not immediately available, Mastandrea said.
The American Red Cross is assisting the residents of the home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
