Fire investigators say they are still working to determine what caused a townhome fire that left a 32-year-old woman dead and a dog dead in Round Lake late last month.
The Round Lake Police Department and Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 10:08 p.m. on October 29 to the 1400 block of Remington Lane in Round Lake for a report of a structure fire.
Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Jay VandeBerg said at the time that firefighters arrived to find flames coming from the second floor of a townhouse.
Fire crews entered the home to locate, contain and extinguish the fire and search for victims, VandeBerg said.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level to bring additional firefighters from the surrounding communities to assist.
An adult female was discovered inside the residence, VandeBerg said.
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek identified the woman asย Karli Corey, 32, of Round Lake.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. A dog also died in the fire. No one else was injured.
An autopsy performed showed Corey died as a result of injuries consistent with the inhalation of products of combustion, Banek said.
The fire was deemed under control in approximately 30 minutes, VandeBerg said. The residence sustained significant damage and is uninhabitable.
The Antioch, Countryside, Fox Lake, Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Villa, Lake Zurich, Libertyville, McHenry and Spring Grove fire departments assisted the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District.
Surrounding fire departments were also on hand to handle several other calls for service in the greater Round Lake area while crews were tied up with the fire.
Police detectives, fire investigators, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal and the Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene.
Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District Assistant Fire Marshal Bruce Hill said on Sunday that the fire district is still investigating the cause of the fire.
A determination has not been made whether the fire was accidentally or intentionally set.
Hill said the fire was determined to have originated in a bedroom of the home.
